Official Ford Ironman World Championship Training Camp - Day 1

Reported by Coach Mark Shorter

Saturday, October 4, dawned sunny & warm in at the Kona Plantaion in Kailua-Kona. LifeSport coaches Paul Regensburg, Dan Smith,  Mark Overton, Mark Shorter, Bruce Regensburg and Kona local Steve Crane joined LifeSport professional athlete Katya Meyers at the King Kamehameha Hotel for the start of the 2008 Official Ford Ironman Preparation Camp in Kona, Hawaii. 13 camp participants from throughout Canada, parts of the U.S., France, Austria and Southeast Asia participated in a morning swim seminar lead by coach Bruce and swam at the Ironman swim start followed by an afternoon run seminar lead by Mark Shorter and a run in the infamous Natural Energy Lab portion of the Ironman run course.

The swim course was busy with all sorts of Ironman swimmers and there was a definite chop & current in the water. Coaches Paul and Mark took the kayaks to lead the camp participants in some drills, intervals and sighting exercises while Katya Meyers and coaches Dan and Mark joined the “campers” for about 3 kilometers of fun and fitness in preparation for their own participation in Ironman Kona 2008. Camp participants especially appreciated tips on sighting, drafting, goggle defogging and course tactics. The hardest part of the workout was when he “campers” had to tread water between Dan & Mark in the kayaks awaiting that perfect group photo!

In the afternoon everyone piled into a 15 passenger van and headed out on the Queen K Highway to the Natural Energy Lab where they were put through some drills at desired Ironman race pace. Campers worked on their run technique, high fives, visualizing and pacing and were treated to an aid station run by Shantel, coach Mark and coach Steve. They liked being on the course around the time they would be racing in Ironman. They liked being able to put run techniques discussed in the seminar right into practice on the Ironman course.

Everyone arrived back at the King Kamehameha hotel already looking forward to the next morning’s bike seminar and training session and the afternoon’s nutrition seminar. Life goes on at the LifeSport Ironman Kona Camp, stay tuned!
